How are fabric pots better than plastic pots?
1. The roots can breathe better due to the increased availability of oxygen; The porous fabric membrane allows air in much easier than solid plastic. This can reduce the likelihood of overwatering and can also lead to faster wet/dry cycles - especially good for Coco Coir and Coir Mix mediums such as 60/40 and 70/30.
2. Air pruning the roots; when roots hit the inside wall of a traditional plastic pot, they'll simply turn in the most convenient direction and keep growing, causing circling and tangling. This can suffocate and restrict the root zone, slowing growth and increasing the risk of disease. When roots reach the wall of a fabric pot, they'll try to grow through it and soon find the outside air. This will cause the root to self-prune and stop growing in that direction, reorganising growth from further inside the pot which leads to increased branching and fuller overall root growth.
3. Easier to handle. As well as being washable and reusable (simply put on a gentle wash such as a 'wool cycle'), they're much easier to transport and come with convenient handles, making them easier to maneuver when full. There are also no holes at the bottom of the pot, removing much of the mess that comes with filling, moving and watering plastic pots.
